Hundreds of woody and herbaceous plants, mostly from tropical climates, are happy to grow and bloom indoors in pots or planters, where they add color, fragrance, and the rich greens of their leaves. They are happiest with humidity in the 50% range, which can be managed with water-retaining planters or a humidifier. Fact is, people are also happiest with some humidity -- another reason to enjoy plants indoors. Light requirements vary by species, but most houseplants get enough light in or near a south window.
